In 2025, Corey decided to take a chance on that passion. After realizing there was a community of plant enthusiasts right here in Delaware who shared his excitement for all things botanical, he turned his love of plants into a business.
“I decided to take a chance on passion – selling the thing I wanted to talk to people about – and found that there was room for it here in Delaware,” Corey shared.
What started as a love for plants quickly became a way to connect with the community. Corey discovered that Delaware had plenty of green thumbs eager to learn, grow, and share their own plant stories. For Corey, downtown Delaware was the natural place to grow BoDurtha’s Plants as he lives downtown and spends nearly all of his time in the community. That connection to downtown is part of what makes BoDurtha’s Plants special. Corey has created a true micro-retail experience; a small, intentional space where customers feel like they have discovered something unique. Located in the rear of 24 E. Winter Street, the shop has become a little horticultural secret for plant enthusiasts looking for something different.
“People who come in are immediately interested in the aesthetic and feel like they’ve found something special,” Corey explained.
BoDurtha’s Plants specializes in rare and exotic houseplants, along with the products needed to help them thrive. But the experience extends beyond simply purchasing a plant. Corey’s goal is to help people become more confident plant owners by sharing knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration. Through his social media channels, he creates plant-focused content that introduces people to new varieties, offers helpful tips, and encourages curiosity about the world of botany.
One of his favorite products to share with customers is the moss pole, a tool that helps indoor plants recreate their natural climbing environment. Many houseplants naturally climb trees in the wild as they grow toward better light. By giving them something to climb indoors, plants can grow healthier and stronger.
While the plants may be what brings people through the door, it is often the conversation that keeps them coming back. “Tell me about your favorites, your least favorites, your problem children, and your success stories,” Corey said. “I want to talk about these things!” Whether someone is caring for their first houseplant or growing an indoor jungle, Corey enjoys helping customers learn more about their plants and celebrate their successes.
