In June 2016, Mark and Terri-Lynne Smiles opened the doors to The Greater Gouda with a simple but meaningful idea: bring high-quality, specialty foods to downtown Delaware while creating a place rooted in personal service and community connection.

The idea for The Greater Gouda grew out of both necessity and opportunity. At the time, a local grocery store that had featured Ohio-based and specialty foods, including cheeses, had closed, leaving a gap for customers who valued unique, high-quality options.
At the same time, Mark and Terri-Lynne saw something else: a growing community that deserved more places to shop, gather, and experience downtown life. Living just blocks from downtown Delaware, they also had a personal stake in its success. The goal wasn’t just to open a shop –it was to help strengthen a district they cared about.
