Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Delaware County District Library is far more than a place to check out books, it’s a vibrant community hub with a rich history, modern resources, and something for everyone.
Its roots stretch back to 1904, with the historic Carnegie building marking the beginning of a long-standing commitment to education and access. Today, that legacy continues through a forward-thinking approach that blends tradition with innovation. The library’s local history resources offer a deeper look at how both the institution and the community have grown together over time.
While shelves are still filled with books, magazines, and newspapers, the library’s offerings go far beyond the expected. Cardholders have access to eBooks, audiobooks, DVDs, video games, board games, and even unexpected items like Loogs (three-string guitars) and mobile hotspots. The Maker Studio space, study rooms, and community meeting rooms provide additional opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and lifelong learning. Best of all, these resources are free with a library card, available to every Ohio resident.
The library is also designed as a welcoming space for everyone, whether you’re diving into research, working remotely, or simply looking for a quiet place to relax. Visitors can take advantage of free study areas, Wi-Fi, climate-controlled comfort, and public restrooms, even if you don’t have a library card! For Ohio Wesleyan University students, getting a card is easy; just bring your campus address to sign up.
One of the library’s most unique spaces is the Local History Room, where visitors can discover fascinating artifacts, including a real sulky once used in harness horse racing. And if you’re unsure what to read next, the staff are always ready with recommendations – they genuinely love helping people find their next great book!
The Delaware County District Library also plays an active role in downtown life. Its walkable location brings in a diverse mix of visitors every day, and the library regularly partners with Main Street Delaware for events like First Friday and other community initiatives.

A standout example of this collaboration is the Great GeekFest, an annual all-ages comic-con celebration held in partnership with downtown businesses. Taking place alongside November’s First Friday, the event transforms downtown into a lively, themed experience with extended library hours and “geeky” activities throughout the area.

Another highlight of the year is the Summer Reading Club, running from June 1 through July 31. This program encourages readers of all ages to stay engaged while partnering with local businesses to offer fun rewards and incentives along the way.
