The programs that Main Street Delaware oversees include First Friday celebrations, Farmers’ Markets, Summer on Winter Concerts, the “Home for the Holidays” downtown Christmas experience, including the tree lighting, Santa’s House, Carriage Rides, Dash for Dasher scavenger hunt, Holiday Shopping Extravaganza, and holiday parade. All of these events are free to attend!
Things for our organization have looked much different since COVID-19 struck. Our main sources of income are acquired through Event Revenue and Sponsorships. On March 12, 2020 all of our in-person community events were canceled until further notice, and they have not yet been approved to resume. This has resulted in a devastating loss for our organization, over $20,000.
One event that has been able to resume during COVID-19 has been our Farmers’ Market, but not in it’s typical fashion. The location has been temporarily changed to the Delaware County Fairgrounds. Fortunately, the governor’s recognition of agriculture as an essential service allowed us to be able to continue to offer this service to the community. Giving consumers peace of mind when it comes to their healthy, safe and affordable food supply. It was the direct recommendation of the Delaware General Health District as well as the City of Delaware that we temporarily relocate our Farmers’ Market away from historic downtown. We explored several different options and based on the needs, and amenities of both our vendors and customers we have decided that the Delaware County Fairgrounds was the best local alternative. Unfortunately, this meant additional costs for our organization. Making this change was not an easy decision, but we are proud to still be able to continue this resource for the community.
